Q&A Helping Veterans Move Into a New Home — And Stay There

April 23, 20262 min read

This update explains how the VA helps Veterans after they move out of homelessness and into housing.

What Is VA Homeless Housing Support?
VA homeless housing support is when the VA helps Veterans who do not have stable housing find a safe place to live.

This is a program that helps Veterans move into housing and stay housed.

It does more than give someone a key. It also helps them adjust to their new life.

What Is Changing?
There is no new rule change. This is a reminder of how the VA continues to support Veterans after they move into housing.

Here are the main points:

The VA will provide extra support during the first 3 to 9 months after a Veteran moves in.
The VA will connect Veterans to health care, mental health care, and other services.
The VA will help Veterans build routines, find jobs, and connect with their community.

This support is ongoing.

Why Is the VA Doing This?
The VA says this suppor
t is important because:

The first few months in housing are the most critical.
Early support helps prevent Veterans from becoming homeless again.
Stable housing improves health, safety, and independence.

Are There Any Exceptions?
No. These support services are available to eligible Veterans exiting homelessness.

What Happens to People Already Receiving This Benefit?
People already receiving housing support will continue to receive services.

Nothing changes for current participants.

How to Apply
If a Veteran is homeless or at risk of homelessness, they can get help by:

Calling 877-424-3838 (National Call Center for Homeless Veterans)
Visiting
VA.gov and searching “VA Homeless Programs”
Speaking with a local VA representative

When Does This Start?
This support is already in place and ongoing.

This update is important because housing is only the first step. Veterans need support after move-in to build stability and independence.

Veterans and families should stay informed and reach out for help if they have questions.
