VA Community Care Dental Update: New Administrator for Veterans

VA Seeks New Dental Care Administrator for Community Care Network

March 10, 20262 min read

The VA has released a request for proposals to find a new company to manage dental care in the Community Care Network. This update explains what the VA is planning and why it matters to Veterans.

What VA Community Care Dental Is

VA community care allows eligible Veterans to receive health care from non‑VA providers, with the VA covering the cost.

Dental care is part of this program for Veterans who qualify.

The VA is now looking for a company to build and manage a nationwide network of licensed dental providers. This network will include:

  • General dental care

  • Specialty dental care

  • Preventive services like cleanings

  • Pharmacy support related to dental needs

What Is Changing

The VA has announced several updates:

  • A request for proposals has been released for a new dental care administrator.

  • The selected company will create and manage a national dental provider network.

  • The goal is to improve and standardize dental services for eligible Veterans across the country.

Why the VA Is Making This Change

The VA says this update is important because:

  • Dental health is a key part of overall health.

  • Veterans need reliable access to preventive and restorative dental care.

  • A strong provider network gives Veterans more choices and better access to care.

Today, about 40% of all VA care is delivered through community care.
Of nearly nine million Veterans enrolled in VA health care, about 26% qualify for dental benefits.

In fiscal year 2025:

  • 888,051 Veterans received dental care through the VA.

  • More than 3.5 million dental procedures were provided through community care.

Eligibility Rules

There are no new changes to dental eligibility.
Veterans must still meet the VA’s existing dental eligibility requirements.

What This Means for Veterans Already Receiving Dental Care

Veterans currently receiving dental care through community care can continue their treatment.
This update focuses on improving how the dental provider network will be managed in the future.

How to Check Eligibility

Veterans who want to learn more about dental eligibility can:

  • Visit VA.gov

  • Contact their local VA medical center

  • Speak with a VA representative

When This Change Starts

The request for proposals has been released.
The new contract will begin once the VA selects a vendor.

This update is important because it aims to improve access to quality dental care for eligible Veterans. Veterans should check their eligibility and stay informed about future updates to the VA community care program.
